かつては、尼寺としても縁切り寺としても知られていました。
江戸時代には縁切り寺として、群馬県の満徳寺と東慶寺のみが幕府に公認されていました。
明治期以降は縁切り寺でも尼寺でもなくなり、男子禁制も解かれています。

境内は様々な花が咲き、尼寺らしい柔らかい印象を受けます。
特に菖蒲が有名です。

Tokei-ji was founded in 1285.
This temple was used to be Ama-dera (nunnery) and Enkiri-dera (divorce temple).
During Edo Period, only two temples in Japan, Mantoku-ji in Gunma prefecture and Tokei-ji were officially approved as Enkiri-dera by the Edo Shogunate.

Many flowers bloom each seasons in the precinct and those flowers express soft impression.
Especially, Japanese iris is famous for this temple.
